MATH 8 SYLLABUS
LCHS 7/8 -Modified Math 8 – RSP
Mrs. Deans - Room 215 - [email protected]
Course Guidelines (2018 – 2019)
Welcome to RSP Math 8! I hope that you will find our class to be a great learning experience, one that you will hopefully learn to like doing the math☺. This course is a modification of the general education Mathematics Department curriculum for Math 8. We will work to build algebraic reasoning and problem solving skills to correspond with the Common Core 8th grade math standards and the Board-approved LCHS Mathematics Department curriculum. The modifications will be dictated by each student’s individual needs and the pace of the class will be determined by the needs and abilities of the students. In addition to the text, additional supplementary materials may be used in order to reinforce curriculum content.
Materials needed:
Grading:
Grading will be based on the accumulation of points from classwork, performance tasks/projects, class participation, quizzes, and tests. I take into account the completeness of the assignment, following directions, correct computations, and effort put forth to produce the finished product. I also take into account the ability level of the individual student as outlined in their Individualized Education Plan and make modifications/accommodations as needed.
Grading Scale:
A: 90 – 100% B: 80 – 89% C: 70 – 79% D: 60 – 69% F: 59% or below
Homework:
Classwork will be completed during class time with little to no work outside of the class. I believe that students need to practice what they have learned with the teaching staff (me and the paraprofessionals in the classroom) where we can monitor students conceptual and computational understanding, readily addressing any misconceptions before they become a habit.
Student Responsibility: To be respectful and courteous to everyone at all times and to follow school rules. Also, to attempt all math with a good attitude, and to ask for help when needed! ☺ In our class we follow the 5 P’s: Be Prompt, Prepared, Polite, Productive and Positive!
How to Succeed:
Absences: YOU are responsible for making up missed assignments.
Extra Help / Questions: I am available to my students and their families. Students who desire extra help can meet with me by prearrangement before or after school. I can be reached by email: [email protected]
Technology Policy:
We, as a faculty, believe that in order to effectively educate students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, communicators and collaborators in the 21st century, we should require that they use technology responsibly. Recognizing that this modern technology tempts us with more and more compelling distractions, we do see the need for some regulation. The goal, therefore, of our technology policy has to be to encourage students to use technology in the classroom solely as a learning tool. Technology misuse disrupts class goals and will not be tolerated. Any infractions will result in consequences described in our school’s cell phone policy.
The following are examples of ways that technology should/will not be used in the classroom:
In closing: I look forward to working with you in making this a successful year in RSP Math 8 and will do whatever I can to help you be successful in our class. It’s my hope that with your parent, you, and me working together, you will be able to reach your individual math goals. The skills you learn in this class will serve you well in the future.
